Bearden High School Band Bio
Consisting of over 200 students, the Bearden High School Bulldog Band program has a long tradition of success. During the school year, Bearden high school students have the opportunity to perform in Marching, Symphonic, Concert, Winterguard, Indoor Drumline, and Jazz ensembles, giving students a chance to explore many different genres, performance venues, and facets of music.
Considered one of the region’s finest marching programs, the 160 member BHS Marching band includes woodwind and brass instruments, as well as an auditioned Color Guard, Drum Line, and Front Ensemble. The band represents the community throughout many events every fall. Each year, the marching band travels to several band contests in the Southeast, where the group is consistently awarded superior ratings in music and visual effect. The Color Guard, Majorettes, Percussion, and drum majors also regularly receive superior ratings, as well as winning a number of class awards. On Friday nights, the band supports the BHS football team by playing at both home and away games. The band also performs at numerous community events, such as the Knoxville Veteran’s Parade, performances for several community businesses, and the Knox County Schools Band Exhibition. The band has received invitations to perform all over the world – from California and Canada, to Ireland and even China. Recent performance highlights for this ensemble include: Disney Magic Music Days Parade, Chicago St. Patrick's Day Parade, New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade, ABC Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia, PA.
After the marching season ends, students have the opportunity to perform in a concert band setting. In December, the band holds a holiday concert, with performances by the Jazz Band, Percussion Ensembles, and Color Guard.
In the spring semester, students are given the chance to further their musical skills in a concert ensemble setting. The two bands, Concert and Symphonic, perform a variety of music, including classical transcriptions, standard wind band repertoire, instrumental features, and new pieces for wind band. These groups hold two concerts each year- one in March and one in May. The 60 member Concert Band consists of freshmen and acts as a prerequisite to Symphonic Band. Symphonic Band is made of 100 upperclassmen musicians. Both ensembles are very successful, consistently receiving superior ratings at regional band festivals. Recent performance highlights for the Concert and Symphonic Bands include:
University of Tennessee Conductors Symposium Clinic Band in Knoxville, Tennessee (2011) Tennessee Music Educators Conference State Festival in Nashville, Tennessee (2012) Host for Jeff Coffin (Saxophonist for the Dave Matthews Band and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones) Jazz Saxophone Clinic (2014) Host for Rashaan and Roland Barber (Professional Jazz Trombone and Saxophone musicians) Jazz Clinic featuring the Knoxville Youth Jazz Orchestra (2014)
